Less Stress, Good Business

By Matthew Bandyk

Posted February 6, 2008

If you're sick of the 9-to-5, five-day-a-week grind, it might not just be a problem for you—it could be a problem for your whole company. In Schedule Flexibility and Stress: Linking Formal Flexible Arrangements and Perceived Flexibility to Employee Health, a study in Community, Work and Family, Dawn Carlson of Baylor University and Joseph Grzywacz of Wake Forest University find that "flextime" work schedules, when combined with compressed workweek schedules, not only make employees' lives less stressful but also increase a company's competitive advantage. The authors looked at over 80,000 employees across the United States. They found that, when used alone, these alternative schedules have little effect, but when used together, they reduce burnout and stress and increase employees' job satisfaction.

Putting Things Into Perspective

I really didn't think we could get any worse than George Bush, but Obama has proved me wrong.

What If George W. Bush had made a joke at the expense of the Special Olympics, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had given Gordon Brown a set of inexpensive and incorrectly formatted DVDs, when Gordon Brown had given him a thoughtful and historically significant gift, would you have approved?
If George W. Bush had given the Queen of England an iPod containing videos of his speeches, would you have thought this embarrassingly narcissistic and tacky?

Whiskey Rebellion

August 1st, 1794

The Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 is regarded as one of the first tests of federal authority in United States history and of the young nation's commitment to the constitutional rule of law.

In 1790, the new national government of the United States was attempting to establish itself. Because the government had assumed the debts incurred by the colonies during the Revolution the government was deep in debt. During the 1791 winter session of Congress both houses approved a bill that put an excise tax on all distilled spirits. United States Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, proposed the bill to help prevent the national debt from growing. Loud protests from all districts of the new nation soon followed. These protests were loudest in the western counties of Pennsylvania.

Meditation: Getting Started
How to relax the Buddhist way. A few basic exercises on focusing your attention.

By: Katherine Ellison

Buddhism offers a rich variety of meditation practices. The following basic exercise in focusing attention comes from B. Alan Wallace's The Attention Revolution.

Begin by sitting on a cushion with your legs crossed or, if that's uncomfortable, in a chair or even lying on your back, but always with your back straight and body relaxed. Your eyes may be closed, half-closed or open.
