This Month’s Quote

In dwelling, live close to the ground.
In thinking, keep to the simple.
In conflict, be fair and generous.
In governing, don't try to control.
In work, do what you enjoy.
In family life, be completely present.
--Tao Te Ching

What is the history behind Humor Therapy?

Humor has been used in medicine throughout recorded history. One of the earliest mentions of the health benefits of humor is in the book of Proverbs in the Bible. As early as the 13th century, some surgeons used humor to distract patients from the pain of surgery. Humor was also widely used and studied by the medical community in the early 20th century. In more modern times, the most famous story of humor therapy involved Norman Cousins, then editor of the Saturday Review. According to the story, Mr. Cousins cured himself of an unknown illness with a self-invented regimen of laughter and vitamins. (From the American Cancer Society)

This Month’s Trivia

A magic potion or charm thought to arouse sexual love, especially
toward a specific person, is known as a "philter."
The last thing to happen is the ultimate. The next-to-last is the penultimate, and the second-to-last is the antepenultimate.
The study of word origins is called etymology. The study of insects is called entomology.
A small European plum named a "sloe" is used to flavor the liqueur called "sloe gin." You should probably sip it slowly, but that has nothing to do with its name.
Rio is Spanish for "river," so "Rio Grande River" is a redundancy. Just write "Rio Grande." Non-Hispanic Americans have traditionally failed to pronounce the final E in "Grande", but they've learned to do it for the large size of latte, so perhaps it's time to start saying it the proper Spanish way: "REE-oh GRAHN-day." Or to be really international we could switch to the Mexican name: "Rio Bravo."
A path with a confusing proliferation of turns is tortuous (from a French root meaning "twisted"). But "torturous" (meaning painful or unpleasant, like torture) is very frequently confused with it. So often has "tortuous logic" (tangled, twisted logic) been misspelled as "torturous logic" that it has given rise to a now independent form with its own meaning, "tortured logic." Few people object to the latter; but if you want to describe your slow progress along a twisting path, the word you want is "tortuous."
The oldest known animal was a tortoise, which lived to be 152 years old.
There will not be a full moon on Halloween until the year 2020.
Black, Green, and oolong teas are all derived from exactly the same plant. The differences in taste and color come from their processing.
BMW stands for Bayersiche Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works). Although BMW made its first car in 1928, they made their first aircraft engine in 1917.
The current BMW logo, introduced in 1920, was based on the circular design of a white aircraft propeller on a blue background.
In 1984, when "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was released, the MPAA didn't think the film deserved an "R" rating, but parents were shocked at the violence and disturbing images in the film. So they created a rating between "PG" and "R" -- "PG-13"!
There are 80,000 miles of wire, made up of 25,572 strands that took 6 months to 'spin' together to form the cables. The 746 foot towers each have 600,000 rivets.

Proof That Humor Cures Illness
In 1964 Norman Cousins went into the hospital with a life threating spinal disease. Doctors gave Cousins a one in five hundred chance of survival. Those aren’t very good odds. In fact, doctors had given up on Cousins. They knew he would never get out of the hospital alive. They knew he would never survive his illness. Fortunately Cousins didn’t give up on himself. While in the hospital he decided to infuse himself with laughter treatments. For fifteen minutes a day he watched clips of Laurel & Hardy movies, Abbott & Costello, the Marx Brothers. And he found that fifteen minutes of laughter a day provided him with two hours of pain free sleep at night.  Eventually Cousins was able to walk out of the hospital completely free of his illness. That’s the power of laughter. Try it. I guarantee you will feel better and live longer.

Stress On The Job

Stress on the job is not healthy. Check out the results of this 2000 annual Attitudes In The American Workplace VI

80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help;

14% of respondents had felt like striking a coworker in the past year, but didn't;

25% have felt like screaming or shouting because of job stress, 10% are concerned about an individual at work they fear could become violent;

9% are aware of an assault or violent act in their workplace and 18% had experienced some sort of threat or verbal intimidation in the past year.

Stress can be dangerous. You need to get a grip on it before it gets to you.
